The Prince of Wales has launched a new environmental channel on Amazon Prime, saying he hopes it will capture the imagination of the watching world to save the planet.

The Prince piloted his RE:TV channel on its own “content platform” last year, and has now signed up with the Amazon streaming giant and its 200 million members.

The move could see his advice on the environment reach viewers in 19 countries, with 153 million Prime users in the United States alone.

Two years ago, Amazon unveiled its own “climate pledge” to be carbon neutral by 2014, but was criticised last year as its emissions grew at 19 per cent. The company expects to run on clean energy by 2025, it has said.

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, met Jeff Bezos in the US earlier this week, where they discussed the Amazon founder's $1 billion commitment to conservation projects.

“Amazon is coming to the rescue of the Amazon,” Mr Johnson joked.

The Prince, who has spent decades trying to convince the public of the need to bring about “harmony” in nature, is the editor-in-chief of the RE:TV channel.

He has now said he hopes to bring it to a wider audience.

“I’ve spent a lot my lifetime trying to engage people and businesses with the issues and solutions of the climate crisis,” he said.

“RE:TV was therefore set up with the aim of capturing the will and imagination of humanity and champion the most inspiring solutions for sustainability from around the world.

“I hope that with this partnership with Prime Video we can bring these inspiring innovations and ideas to a wider audience and demonstrate together what is possible in the pursuit of a sustainable future.”

Amazon Prime Video is a competitor of Netflix, the television and film streaming service, which has signed up the Prince’s son and daughter-in-law for a multi-year deal to make “impactful” programmes.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have promised to “create content that informs but also gives hope” in an exclusive deal with the streaming service, which has 209 million subscribers.

'Solutions to accelerate a more sustainable future'

Prince Charles’s channel will be focused entirely on the environment, showcasing “solutions working to accelerate a more sustainable future”.

“Covering a huge range of innovation from recycling coffee to reseeding rainforests, the films highlight projects from across the world working on brilliant initiatives that can help transform how business is done, helping us make a cleaner and more sustainable economy,” a RE:TV spokesman said.

The announcement of the new partnership was made to mark New York Climate Week.

The channel’s programmes include ‘Remapping Restoration’ which profiles Restor, a data-sharing environment platform which was recently shortlisted for Prince William’s Earthshot Prize.

‘Recycling Everything’ showcases a New Jersey-based company, TerraCycle, which has become a global leader in recycling hard-to-recycle materials, while ‘Refuelling Aviation’ visits Chicago-based start-up, Lanzatech, which develops sustainable aviation fuel.

'We must urgently reverse the exploitation of the natural world'

Introducing the first series on the channel, the Prince says: “The finely-woven tapestry of life is undoubtedly one of the greatest marvels of our universe.

“We must urgently reverse the exploitation of the natural world if it is to sustain us for generations to come. The time is long overdue to put nature at the centre of our economic model.

“We have the right minds and the right technology in our hands. We know what we must do.

“We must now focus our effort and our actions in the same direction, in the biggest and most effective global alliance the world has ever seen.

“There is hope, but we’ve got to get our act together. And we’ve got to remember: the world is what sustains us.”
